Under Vladimir Lenin, the Bolsheviks began running Russia as a communist nation. There were serious food shortages and most farmers suffered from severe poverty. Later, Stalin beat Trotsky for party leadership and began violently defending his position, massacring civilians who protested and essentially ruling by fear and harsh punishments.
