The Yankee Clipper
Billy Martin was hesitant about taking the $75,000 per year offer to manage the New York Yankees for several reasons. The contract that Gabe Paul and George Steinbrenner offered to Martin contained certain clauses that were, according to Martin, rather insulting. He had never signed such a contract before. One clause stated that no matter what the policies of the Yankee team were, he had to display personal conduct that showed him be in favor of such policies. Another clause stated he could never criticize Yankee management and finally, Martin had to make himself available on or off season to be a management consultant on "unspecified" matters. Despite feeling uncomfortable with the clauses he signed on anyway.
Matt Martin is number 17 on the New York Islanders.
