It is hard to pinpoint exactly what muscles are used in tennis but having played for 8 years I would say all of them. Of course the main muscles that you use are in your arms and legs, but you use your abs and other smaller muscles all over your body to stabilize you as you move to and hit the ball.

Pretty much every muscle in your body will come into play on a good swing. From the legs all the way to the hands and everything in between. Good core strength of the abs, lats and back contribute power. Many pro golfers routinely work out with weights to help build strength.

ANSWER:

Core Muscles- The core is the base of the Golf swing because it stabilizes the entire body throughout the swing.

Upper Back- The upper back muscles are important because they control the back swing and follow through of the club.

Shoulders- The shoulders are an important muscle in the golf swing because they create the speed of the club through the ball while keeping it under control.

Legs- The legs are vital to a good golf swing because they keep the solid posture of the golfer intact throughout the swing. Strengthening these muscles will help to give the golfer a stronger, more controlled golf swing.

Forearm/Tricep Strength- Having strong forearms and triceps will also give the golfer the ability to power through rough and bad lies, because it will power through the ball with much more force.

The short answer:

You use your whole body in golf. The golf swing is an athletic action that requires timing and skill to send a wave of energy starting at your legs and hips and ending at the club head.

The long answer:

To swing a club properly you have to move your body with the correct sequencing starting from the ground up. From the top of the backswing, you should be using your legs and pushing against the ground to rotate your hips.

From there, the resistance that you are creating between your upper and lower body sends that energy from your legs and hips and brings it to your dominant shoulder.

As you continue rotating, that wave of energy travels through your arms, hands and to the club head as you whip the club through the ball.

The major muscle groups that you use to create a powerful swing would really be your glutes, hip flexors, chest and shoulders. In reality, you need overall muscle strength to be able to create and control a powerful swing. Golf is about consistency, being able to control and stabilize your golf swing throughout your entire body is a must to make a repeatable consistent swing.

Working out with a Swiss Ball can be a great way to help build overall muscle strength and increase body stability because you must use all your little muscles to help stabilize yourself as you are doing exercises with the ball.
