In the competitive sport of orienteering athletes navigate their way as fast as they can on unfamiliar terrain between controls using a detailed topographic map and compass. The term orienteering was first used in Sweden to describe cross country navigation using map and compass. Early use was as a military exercise. The first public orienteering meet was held in Norway in 1897. Ernst Killander popularized the sport and held the first major meet in 1919 with over 100 competitors.
