when the game originally started in 1823 at Rugby School players wore their normal clothes. Then as the game improved and went in to the universities they developed a jersey and knickerbockers ( 3 quarter length trousers) The jersey was a knitted jersey similar to those worn in domestic life as the rugby tops of the 60 to today were not easily created. Their boots were very much like working boots with nailed in stud's.
Later a heavy cotton jersey was made and but the knickerbockers still were being worn well in to the later 1890s
