I am not familiar with a Newport company that made Baseball bats but given that from 1900-1940, and before the days of television, every kid played ball and every wood turning company made a baseball bat, or so it seams, and as such, there are hundreds if not thousands of private label bats out there. The bulk of the value on most collectible baseball bats relies on player endorsements. Without a player endorsement, the value will rely on vintage baseball bat features such as a decal, or special features such as a mushroom knob, a ring bat, ornate engraving, etc. A common baseball bat made before 1940 with no player endorsement might sell in the $35. price range if in excellent or better condition. With features such as a Mushroom knob the bat could fetch a price in the $300.-$400. price range. I would need more information on your bat to give you a more accurate value. I will leave a link below for prices on other vintage baseball bats that might be similar to yours.
It may be the trademark for the name of the jewelery company it's from or perhaps a certain someones initials.
Just a guess , possibly a jewlers mark? <><><> Think that is a good guess. The mark, known as a Jeweler's Touch, is their registered trademark. Very possible that is the touch for Zales jewelers.
