snowploughing is the term used when you slow down by making a wedge shape with your skis, it is mostly taught for when you are just learning how to ski, but it is not a good stop for the backcountry. Once you get more advanced you can do stops such as the hockey stop, and slow down using movements with your skis that are sometimes called speed checks, these two other stops are much better, but take more practice to learn
