Since 1973, the highest single season batting average by a pitcher was in 1993 when Orel Hershiser hit .356 (26 for 73) for the Dodgers. I was not able to find a list of batting averages pre 1973 but I know there has to be one on the Web somewhere. I can tell you that in 1925, Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators batted .433 (42 for 97) and that is the best pitcher's batting average I have heard of. Red Ruffing was an excellent hitter and his highest BA was .364 (40 for 110) in 1930 for the Red Sox and Yankees. George Uhle batted .361 (52 for 144) for the Cleveland Indians in 1923. Curt Davis batted .381 (40 for 105) for the 1939 St Louis Cardinals.
