The scoring method really depends on what type of skiing you're talking about. In any speed or race skiing (ex. cross-country nordic, slalom, downhill, etc.), you are ranked by your total time for your best run, total time of multiple runs, or total of two or three best, depending on the competition. In freestyle skiing, it is mostly judges' discretion, where you are judged on difficulty of stunts, style, and how well you pull it off. in bigair and half pipe competitions, you are also judged on the amount of air and hang time. Finally, in nordic long jump, you are simply ranked by the distance you jump, combined with a judge's discretion on stability in the air and your landing.

In cribbage, the scoring method of "muggins" allows players to earn points for their opponent's missed scoring opportunities. This affects gameplay by adding a strategic element where players must pay attention to their opponent's plays and potential scoring opportunities. It encourages players to be more cautious and attentive, as missing a scoring opportunity can benefit their opponent. This can lead to more competitive and engaging gameplay as players try to capitalize on their opponent's mistakes while avoiding their own.

Classical skiing, often referred to as cross-country skiing, is a style of skiing characterized by a straight, parallel technique where skiers glide along set tracks. This method emphasizes a rhythmic, alternating motion of the skis, similar to walking or running, and is typically practiced on groomed trails. It allows skiers to enjoy the outdoors while providing a great cardiovascular workout. Classical skiing is distinct from skate skiing, which involves a side-to-side motion and is often performed on wider, groomed tracks.
