It is actually just called the World Cup Trophy. In 1974 it replaced the Jules Rimet (pronounced rim - ay) trophy, which was won for the third time by Brazil in 1970 and awarded to them permanently.
The trophy is called the Webb-Ellis Cup. It was not created specifically for the Rugby world cup but was one found off the shelf and adapted to meet the requirements.
The idea of a Rugby World Cup had been put forward on numerous since the early 1950's. However, the suggestion were greeted with opposition from most unions in the IRFB. The idea again was tabled in several times in the early 1980s, with Australia and New Zealand writing to the IRFB wanting to host a World Cup tournament.In 1985, Australia, New Zealand and France were in favour of a world cup and, despite knowing the fact they knew there was an international sports boycott of South Africa due to apartheid This would certainly prevent their participation,. However, the South African delegates also voted in favour, which was vital at the time of in tying the vote 8-8. When one English delegate followed by a Welsh delegate switched sides, the IRFB finally approved the inaugural cup, by 10 votes to 6.
