A laser pool stick is a gimmick intended to assist in learning how to aim. Nearly any pool instructor will say not to use it - it has very limited use for learning.
Its primary help is not how and where to aim, as it will actually make that process more difficult, but to train the eyes. When a player aims a shot, the dominant eye shows a different aim point than the non-dominant eye. Unless the dominant eye is aligned with the cue, the aim will be off. The laser cue helps to train the eyes and brain to properly choose the proper aim location.
For proper use, the player has to adjust head position and sight until the laser and the visual aim point eventually are the same location. Once the eyes and brain have been trained, it is time to put the laser cue away.
