The word 'coach' came from the Hungarian word, 'kosci', which was short for 'kocsi szekér'. The literal translation for 'the coach/chariot of Kocs'. In Hungary, there was a village where coaches (as in carriages) were first made. The teaching sense comes from the idea of the teacher 'carrying the pupil' through examinations.

The Hungarian word 'kosci', developed into the German language, 'Kotsche, Kutsche', and then into Middle French, 'coche'.
