The "old" volleyball scoring system is know as "side-out" scoring which essentially means that you can only score a point when you are serving. So for example, if the opposing team serves at you, and you win that play, then it is called a side-out, and it is your turn to serve for the next point. No points are given for side-outs, which lead to some very lengthy games (if teams are just siding-out back and forth). Side-out scoring was played to 15, win by 2. The "new" scoring system is known as "rally" scoring which means that points are given on every play, even side-outs. The change to this type of scoring was an attempt to speed up games, as well as give more weight to mistakes made by players.
