When originally built, it was called "Pacific Bell Park", although nearly every local referred to it as PacBell Park. Pacific Bell, headquartered in San Francisco, had contributed large amounts of money toward getting the park built, and purchased naming rights as part of the deal. When Pacific Bell merged with Southern Bell Corporation , the "Pacific Bell" name disappeared, and the park was renamed "SBC Park." Likewise, SBC merged with AT&T and the SBC name disappeared, so the park is now known as "AT&T Park".

When naming rights expire for the park, it may revert to being called "McCovey Park" (named for the small cove of San Francisco Bay where the park is located) or "Giants Park".
