All the players are official whether they're on the field or not.
The official rule for men's field lacrosse calls for 10 players on each team - 3 Attackman, 3 Middies, 3 Defensemen and 1 Goalie - on the field or 20 total players.
There are 22 players on the field if you count both sides. Basically making 11 players on the field for one side.
Only the calls that involve non-judgment can be challenged. Usually, the only non-call plays that can be challenged are the penalties that involve too many players on the field since it is able to be seen on the replay.
