A New York Ranger is sort of the same thing that a Texas Ranger is supposed to be. The name comes from the fact that the guy who put the NY Rangers together's nickname was Tex. From there the association with the Texas lawmen came in, and they were called the New York Rangers.
Tex Rickard, the promoter of Madison Square Garden, was granted a new NHL franchise for the 1926/27 season. The New York press nicknamed the new team 'Tex's Rangers' and the name stuck. Hence the New York Rangers.
