If referee does not immediately award a penalty when a team has transgressed the rules, he may allow the opposition, if they have possession of the ball, to continue play if he (or she) believes that they may gain an advantage by doing so (called "advantage"). This will continue for a period of time and/or a number of moves depending of the opinion of the referee. At the end of this period the referee will either bring the penalty back to the site of the original offence or, if it is felt that the side offended against have made sufficient ground, he (or she) will allow the game to continue until the next infringement of the rules
