you get one player off the ice usually for about two minutes during the penalty
Penalty Kill. During a penalty one team is on the power play (PP) and the other on the penalty kill (PK)
A power play is when the opposing team has a penalty. a penalty is when you have a penalty and are trying to kill it off.
A penalty in ice hockey consists of losing one player who has to sit in the penalty box for a specified period of time (usually either 2 minutes or 5 minutes) during which his team must play one man short. The penalty is killed if the team prevents its opponent from scoring during this period of time.
A powerplay is often awarded when a penalty is given to the opposing team. When a player makes an illegal play, such as hooking or cross-checking, he is given a penalty. The offending player is then sent to the penalty box, usually two minutes for a minor penalty and five minutes for a major penalty. The team of the offending player is then shorthanded-they are only allowed to have four players (minus the goalie) on the ice. The time that the offending player spends in the penalty box is a powerplay for the other team.
A penalty kill is when a team receives a penalty and has to play with a one to two man disadvantage. The penalty kill is over when the oposing team scores or the time received expires.
12 - 3 forwards, 2 defencemen and a goaltender for each team during non-penalty play.
Interference in ice hockey is when you hinder the movement of a player who does not possess the puck. You can body check the play with the puck and no penalty will be called. If you body check a player away from the puck, an interference penalty will be called.

If a player is in the penalty box and some one scores you get to get out of the box. Example: I get a penalty and my team scores I get to get out. Or I'am in the penalty box and then the other team scores I get to get out.
10 minutes is the longest singular penalty a player can receive. Players are, however, able to commit multiple infractions during the same play. A single player is technically able to commit 60 minutes or more in penalties.
