There is a superstition among English cricketers, that 111 is unlucky. This stems from the mistaken believe, and the name, that Admiral Nelson had one eye, one arm and one leg. He had two legs. Anyway, any multiple is also unlucky, as with the double Nelson, 222. To counteract the bad luck, you are supposed to "ground" all your Nelson points, i.e., legs on the ground, arms on the chair, eyes on the action.

I have not seen it documented, but there are a surprising number of times that batsmen get out when the score is on a Nelson. Maybe psychological.

It's based on folklore associated with Admiral Horatio Nelson.According to some lore, the number came about as an unlucky number because of the myth that Nelson has only one eye, one arm, and one leg (to suffer these kinds of injuries and live was considered most unfortunate-furthermore Nelson was eventually killed in action). The fact was that Nelson was a little luckier than the myth claims (he still had both legs-though some rumors point to the "other" leg).

Another lore says they refer to the three times he "won" in great naval battles (Copenhagen, the Nile, and Trafalgar).

However it came about, the myth of "Nelson" has stuck in the lore of English cricket, just as that of the "Devil's Number" (87, 100 - 13) sticks in Australia's Cricket lore.
