Previously, a goalkeeper could not take more than four steps in any direction while handling and controlling the ball. This was changed to give a six-second time limit, and the number of steps are not explicitly limited. The time limit was in place before this year as an IFAB Decision, but now it is codified in law and is a foul worthy of an indirect free kick to the opposing team.
