a free safety is a player on defense whose job is to tackle a player if that player gets past all the other defenders. the free safety is usually the deepest defender on the field and he usually very speedy. on long pass plays, he has run to where the ball is thrown and either knock it down, intercept it, or knock the crap out of the receiver.
