They were founded in 1933 when Art Rooney purchased a football club. They began as the Pittsburgh Football Pirates but changed to Steelers in 1941. In the team's first 40 seasons they posted 31 losing seasons and just one playoff game, but in 1972 the Steelers surged to 11 wins and posted a stunning playoff upset in the famous "Immaculate Reception" game. They didn't reach the Superbowl until 1974 but once they made it they became a dynasty, winning four SBs in a six-season span. They were less consistent in the 1980s but in the 1990s they became a power again, but could not win a Superbowl (they reached the game in 1995 but lost) until 2005; they won in 2005 and again in 2008. Entering 2010 they have posted 529 regular season wins and 31 playoff wins.
