The Saxophone was developed by Adlophe Sax, a Belgian living in the 19th century. It was designed as a type of hybrid between the woodwind and the brass section, using a brass style body but the single reed mouthpiece was like that of the woodwind.He developed 14 types of saxophone ranging in pitch, from the soprano right down to the contrabass. Many composers, from Ravel to Prokofiev, tried to get it permanently integrated into the symphony orchestra, but to no permanent effect. But it is one of the instruments that "made" jazz.
