It is an imprecise distance, generally evenly divided into one fifth of a lap. The problem is, the lap for the Steeplechase, with the extra portion of the course going to the water jump changes from track to track. Some go outside the oval making a lap longer, some go inside the oval, making the lap shorter than the 400 meters of a normal lap. The differences are calculated and compensated for in positioning of the start of the race and the distance to the first barrier (which is significantly longer when the water jump is inside). Ultimately the race will be 3000 meters, with 28 barriers and 7 water jumps.

How far apart are the hurdles in the 300 meter hurdle race?

The distance between 300 Hurdles (or 400 Hurdles) is 35 meters. The distance to the first hurdle (in high school races) is 45 meters and 10 meters from the last (8th) hurdle to the finish line. This is exactly the same as the first 300 meters of a 400 Hurdle race, though the relative position on the track is moved to finish at the common finish line. All the distances on hurdle spacing are available at: http://www.trackinfo.org/hurdles101.html
