There are two categories in which a male and a female team compete together. In the 'pairs' event, the skaters perform things such as jumps (throws and side by side), overhead lifts, and spins (in unison and together). The ladies that do pairs have a shorter dresses (about mid-thigh). Ice dance is very similar to ballroom dancing. There are no jumps, no overhead lifts (other lifts are permitted), and only spins together. The ladies that ice dance wear longer dresses (past knee length).
Ice hockey and curling are the two most common. Ice skating relays, pairs figure skating, and pairs ice dance can also be considered team sports on ice.
There is Ice Dance, Pairs, Ladies, and Men
Ice Skating has lots of forms. Dance, Pairs, Duets, Trios, Freestyle, Hockey, and speed.
Pairs skating fits under the category of the sport 'figure skating'. In figure skating, there are 3 main categories that compete: singles, pairs, and ice dance. There's also synchronized skating, which doesn't generally compete at the same events as the others. Out of singles, pairs, and ice dance, pairs is the most dangerous. Basically everything is done with your partner, including throws, side-by-side jumps, spins, and lifts.
