There are two categories in which a male and a female team compete together. In the 'pairs' event, the skaters perform things such as jumps (throws and side by side), overhead lifts, and spins (in unison and together). The ladies that do pairs have a shorter dresses (about mid-thigh). Ice dance is very similar to ballroom dancing. There are no jumps, no overhead lifts (other lifts are permitted), and only spins together. The ladies that ice dance wear longer dresses (past knee length).
