They began as the Houston Oilers in 1960 but moved to Memphis in 1997 before settling in Nashville in 1998; they changed their name in 1999 to the Titans. In their Oilers days they won two AFL titles and in the late 1970s and 1980s were frequent playoff contenders but could never get to the Superbowl. After losing in the 1993 playoffs quarterback Warren Moon was cut and the team faltered before a new coach, Jeff Fisher, was named in November 1994. The Oilers steadily improved to become a Superbowl contender in 1999, their third year in Tennessee and first year as the Titans. The Titans posted six winning seasons and four 8-8 seasons in the years beginning in 1997 when they played in Tennesee.
