They say 5w30 but for 15 yr old cars I would use engine flush and change oil for 5w40 or cheaper 10w40 castrol mobil1 valvoline. Make its prefference. When changing oil change filter air filter and fuel filter. Peace!

My 04 Reg Golf TDI MKIV has had this intermittent problem. I have found that the engine oil appears to have been overfilled. Drained some off and put oil to correct level on dipstick and the engine management light went out after a short drive. handbook staes oil level is critical.
