Best Answer

The ABC stood for the American Bowling Congress, which existed from 1895 until 2005. It was the sanctioning body for men's bowling, and the companion to the WIBC (Women's International Bowling Congress).

In 2005, the separate men's, women's and youth divisions were reorganized and merged into the USBC, the United States Bowling Congress. But older awards, and bowling equipment, might still say "ABC (or ABC/WIBC) Certified."

Who made the rules for bowling in US?

In the US, the first organization for bowling that was formed was the ABC (American Bowling Congress) on Sept. 9, 1895 , which was a mens only organization. They created the rules for the sport in the US. In 1916, the WIBC (Women's International Bowling Congress) was formed to cater to women's bowling. While basing the rules from the ABC, the WIBC also had rules specific to their organization. In 1958, the American Junior Bowling Congress was formed to organize youth bowlers from preschool through college. They too based their rules from the ABC, yet had additional rules specific to their organization. In 1982, the name of the organization was changed to the YABA(Young American Bowling Alliance). If you bowl a 300 game and the foul lines do not work does it count as a sanctioned game?

No. The word sanctioned in bowling means: " Competition in accordance with American Bowling Congress or Women's International Bowling Congress rules. " Since, according to rules, foul line lights and buzzers must be in working order during competition the game would not be sanctioned under the rules of the ABC or WIBC.

Why did Joe Thum create bowling?

It is believed that he is the father of tenpin bowling. However bowling has been around in one form or another since as earlier as 100 AD in Germany and some say there is archaeological evidence from ancient Egypt that says as old as 3200 BC. Ten pin was brought to the US from the UK. The first indoor bowling alley was constructed in 1840, Knickerbockers of New York City.Joe Thum was a restaurateur. He may brought it to his restaurant for entertainment purposes, but it is my opinion that he was not the inventor/creator.We do however, know that he established America's first bowling organization, the American Bowling Congress (ABC) 09/09/1895.
