Cheerleading can include the use of some forms of gymnastics, but is primarily intended to lead spectators at sports events in cheering for their team. This is done through group stunts, tumbling, jumping, etc., and by organized shouts.

Gymnastics is the performance of athletic routines in the form of jumping, tumbling and using ropes, bars, vaulting and beams. Although there are gymnastic teams, the activity is done on an individual basis, with some members of the team specializing in some events and others specializing on other events.

Many current cheerleaders may have been former gymansts and vice versa.
