What is the distance around an Australian football field?

There is no standard size for an Australian Rules ground.

The 2011 AFL Laws of the Game document states the following:

The playing surface shall be

1: Oval in shape

2: between 135 metres and 185 metres in length; and

3: between 110 metres and 155 metres in width

Australian Rules Football- commonly called Aussie Rules, AFL (for Australian Football League) or just footy, is played on cricket ovals which do not have a standard size. There will be two arcs coming from the goalposts measuring 50 metres and in between these is a centre square measuring 50 metres. Usually there will be extra space in between these depending on the size of the oval so a field would be >150 metres, however sometimes (for instance at the Sydney Cricket Ground) the centre square shaves a few metres off the 50 metre lines making a total field length just under 150 metres.

There is no specified size requirement for an Australian Football field. Australian Rules was originally created to keep cricket players fit in the off season and cricket fields do not have size requirements hence why Australian Rules fields do not have size requirements.

The original recommendation on the size of the ground was an oval of approximate dimensions:
150-200 yds X 120-170 yds.
I have never calculated this for the updated metric measurement system.

But not every ground falls within these guidelines anyway: so sizes are very approximate, ground to ground.
