Free-ride Snowboarding is one type of snowboarding the other being freestyle
free-riding focuses on off-peist riding, searching for powder and jumping off cliffs they usually have bigger snowboards which enable them to keep on top of fresh snow rather than sink and are built for higher speeds unlike freestyle which usually have shorter and more flexible snowboards so they can achieve spins off of kickers and other jumps
The best type of snowboard, in a nutshell. There are three types of snowboarding: Park, Trail and freeriding.
Park is obviously riding through the Terrain park off man made jumps and fixed boxes, rails etc. The most popular park boards ATM are the reverse camber boards as they are easy to spin on and get a large amount of "pop," but are quite light so they don't gather dangerous speeds, in the park.
Trail boards are heavy and flat, designed not for jumps or sharp cornering but for speeding down wide trails.
Freeride boards, as you can probably guess, are the best of both worlds. They have some weight and some advanced manuerverability and enough pop for you to head into back country and find some natural features to drop off. They are also suitable for straight trail and park riding.
It depends on the type of board: All mountain, freestyle, freeride. Just go to your local snowboarding shop and ask for help.
