In Rugby union and league a scrum is a means of restarting play after a minor infringement. It involves forward players from each team, known as the pack or forward pack, binding together in three rows and interlocking with the three opposing teams forwards. This forms a tunnel between the 2 sets of forwards (front rows) the ball in thrown in to the tunnel by the attacking scrumhalf. It is the job of both sets of forwards to push each other off the ball to gain control of the game. The ball is channeled through the scrum to the players making up the backrow where the scrumhalf retrieves it and passes it to their halfback for commence an attack. A further strategy is for the number 8 who is the last person in the rear row to pick up the ball one it arrives at their feet, leave the scrum and set up another phase by driving themselves forward absorbing opposing players as they do so. This allow that attacking team to have great opportunity for reaching the try line area and scoring

A scrum occurs when there is a fault or interruption of play on either team's side. The team without the fault gains possession of the ball and puts it into the scrum hoping to keep possession.

A scrum consists of both team's forwards set up in a particular way only to (In a ram like fashion) engage and struggle to win the ball with their feet, the hooker trying to win the ball with their feet intially. The ball is put in by the scrum-half always on the left side of the team's scrum that has possession ( commonly called the Openside) of the ball.

The scrum in rugby union is made up of;

A number eight

TwoSecond rows or locks

Two flankers or wing forwards

Two Props (one tight head one loose head)

and one hooker.

One Scrum half to put the ball and connect play with the backs

In the League code

A number eight

TwoSecond rows or locks

Two Props (one tight head one loose head)

and one hooker.

One Scrum half to put the ball and connect play with the backs

Note that league does not use the wing forwards (flankers numbered 6 and 7)

As stated it is not easy to describe a scrummage however here is audio visual explaination you may which to see videojug.com/film/rugby-union-guide-to-scrums
