A hybrid is a club that is somewhere between a fairway wood and an iron. It has a closed hollow body like a fairway wood, but generally is not as deep front to back. My observations are that fairway woods are usually greater than 150 ccs, while hybrids are usually around 100. The face usually has some bulge, like a wood, although they should have less because the gear effect will be less due to the more compact head.
They are sometimes labeled as equivalents of long irons, but usually are just tagged according to their loft. A 1 iron is about 15 degrees these days, with 3 degrees between clubs. Head lie and shaft lengths usually correspond to the equivalent irons, but there's no standardization. The shaft is sometimes a wood shaft (0.335 diameter) and sometimes an iron shaft (0.370 inch diameter). There are probably some .350s out there, too.
