In Virginia the best in the state in 2009-2010 was 1:49.78 for boys. Of the 5308 boys that ran the 800 in at least one meet that reported it's results to milestat.com only 87 ran under 2:00 at least once. 2:17 was the time for the 1000th best run, so as you can see less than 20 percent of high school kids in Virginia (which is probably fairly indicative of most states) can run under a 2:17.

When you consider that these are times of only track kids and not the general high school population I wouldn't be sad with a time anywhere under 2:45 if you haven't raced the distance before.

For girls 2:10.55 was the fastest time in the state and only 40 girls got under 2:20. The 1000th (out of 4057) ranked girl ran a 2:54. I don't think a girl should be displeased with anything under 3:05 for a first race.
