Man And Zone
The five types of zone defenses commonly used in basketball are the 2-3 zone, 3-2 zone, 1-3-1 zone, 1-2-2 zone, and the box-and-1. The 2-3 zone features two players near the free-throw line and three closer to the basket, while the 3-2 zone has three players at the perimeter and two inside. The 1-3-1 zone places one player at the top, three in the middle, and one at the back, allowing for quick transitions to cover perimeter shots. The 1-2-2 zone has one player at the top and two at the wings, and the box-and-1 combines man-to-man defense with a zone, where one player guards a specific opponent while others defend in a zone structure.

Think of how the number 5 looks on a die (one dice) X...............X ........X X...............X That's what the 2-1-2 zone looks like. You have two players at the baseline, two players at the top of the key, and one player in the paint playing a zone defense. It is easy to transition into a 2-3 or 3-2 zone, the player in the middle either moves up (3-2) or back (2-3).
A 2-3 zone consists of two guards and either two forwards and a center or three forwards. The primary goal of a 2-3 is to protect the paint, while a 3-2 is meant to not only defend the paint but to also pressure outside shooters.
Some disadvantages of a zone 3-2 defense in basketball include vulnerability to outside shooting, potential openings in the mid-range area, and challenges in defending penetration from the wings. Additionally, it may be more difficult to secure defensive rebounds effectively in this defensive scheme.
In 3-2 zone defense, basketball players focus on defending good outside shooters and weak post players. One player guards the top of the key while to other players guard opposing sides of the wing of the perimeter. The remaining defenders guard the post.
