From bjj.org.uk -

BJJ is the delivery system developed by the Gracie family in the 1920's from old school Judo (Fusen Ryu Jiu-Jitsu) that has been responsibly for the current evolution in Martial Arts training.

It is a combat sport that is equally as potent in a fighting competition as it is within a street fight. This is because of the training methods used. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is trained with aliveness (timing, energy, motion), the same as boxing, judo, muay thai and freestyle/greco roman Wrestling. Students of these arts all know how it feels to make their techniques work against a fully resisting opponent and therefore develop their timing which apart from conditioning is what seperates a good fighter from a bad one.
