I've never seen a whole decathlon covered live. It takes several hours on two days, its just not TV friendly, particularly now with the MTV short attention span. Instead, most TV coverage shows highlight packages of the best performances, or at the Olympic level, there are closed circuit feeds while the event is going on.
The winner of the Olympic decathlon is called "the best athlete in the world".
Because the athlete performs many different events over a two day period that require different qualities which include speed, strength, and endurance. You will never see someone in a track meet that enters both a speed event and a strength event (such as the 100/200 meter dash and shot put). But the decathlete/heptathlete must perform both events. Add to that a middle distance event (1500 meter run in decathlon and 800 meter run in heptathlon) that is always run as the last event and you can add endurance to the speed and strength these athletes must have. Decathletes and hepathletes are considered the best athletes in the world.

Repeat answer:The decathlon is a 10-event competition spread over two days:First Day: 100 meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meter runSecond Day: 110 meter hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin, 1500 meter run
Lisa Ashton is the present (2014) world champion.
Answer: Robert Baker for the USA in 3:58.70Additionally, I want to point out that a world record is the best mark ever recorded in the event. Olympic records, regional records, and meet records are only sub-categorizing records based on a given circumstance, notably location. Thus a decathlete's performance in the 1500 meter run is not distinguished into a separate world record bracket because it's circumstance is different. At best you could distinguish the performance as the best mark in that given event ever during a decathlon.
