Normally a free hit would be awarded at the point where the ball hit the player (except for within the 5 metre arc, pending new rules), unless there is an advantage to be played. If the player used their feet deliberately though, there is a possibiltity of receiving a green or yellow card and a penalty corner if inside the 23-metres area.

There are several different scenarios that may occur, depending on whose foot it hits, where the ball goes and where the foot-ball occurred; if there is no advantage to the foul then play continues: * If the ball touches a foot in open play (between the 23-metre-lines) the opposing team receives a free hit at the spot of the foul; if the opposing team regains the ball and develops play then the game continues. * If the ball touches the foot of an attacker within 14.63 metres of the baseline, a free hit is awarded to the defense. This hit can be taken anywhere up to 14.63 metres from th baseline in line with where the foul occurred; if it occurred in the circle, it may be taken anywhere within the circle. * If the ball touches the defender's foot within the 23-metre-area but outside the circle, the attack receives a free indirect hit at the spot of the foul; if the foul occurred within 5 metres of the circle, it must be taken back to that distance. * If the ball touches the foot of a defender inside the circle accidentally, a penalty corner is awarded; if the foot stopped the probable scoring of a goal, a penalty stroke should be awarded; if the foot was deliberate, the player should receive a yellow card. * If the ball touches the foot of a player with GKPs inside the circle, play on; if outside the circle, a penalty corner is awarded; if deliberately, a yellow card is given to the player.

It depends on what happened before that, and where in the field it was as well as who was around the player. Things can range from a free hit to either team, to nothing at all, to serious things like a penalty corner or stroke.

Depending on where, when and why, a range of things might happen:

  • If there is no advantage to that team or if the player is a goalkeeper within the circle, nothing is done. Play continues.
  • If the foot presents an advantage to the offending team, the apppropriate penalty is given. this may be a free hit or a penalty corner.
  • If the foot prevents the probable scoring of a goal, a penalty stroke is given.
  • If the foot was a deliberate foul, the player may receive a green or yellow card for misconduct,

This is a foul, and a free kick should be awarded for the goalkeepers' team

Hitting the ball is often a decent part of playing the game. However, hitting it at certain times or in certain ways will result in penalties.

Field hockey is a sport in which two opposing teams, of 11 players each, attempt to score goals. They do this by manoeuvring a small hard ball with sticks, and getting into the opponent's goal. More information can be found at the related links.
