In OZ footy, Sergio Silvagni wore #1 for Carlton Football Club during the 1950's and 60's ... then I believe his son wore the same number in his equally illustrious career a generation later.
Ken Fletcher, father of Essendon's current star full back, Dustin Fletcher, was probably Essendon's best player for quite some years, back in the 1970's: he also wore #1.
In Basketball, Umpires are always "stars". Traditionally, it has been they who have assumed the first 3 numbers, #'s 1, 2, 3. So there have been no past stars wearing any number less than 4. i can only guess that like so many past traitions, however, that policy has also changed: Would I be right??
