The track surface was rebuilt using over 3 million bricks after 2 fatal accidents were caused by the breakup of the original tar and asphalt surface. This is why the racetrack has the nickname of "The Brickyard." Races were held during the Memorial Day weekend in 1910 but the first official Indy 500 race was held during the Memorial Day weekend in 1911. By 1938 most of the track had been repaved with asphalt again.

In 1961 only the main straight was resurfaced with asphalt except for a 3-foot wide section at the start/finish line that was left with the bricks showing. Since then the entire 2.5 mile track (except for the 3-foot section of bricks) has been resurfaced in 1976, 1988, 1995 and 2004.
