A stair runner is used on a set of stairs to keep people from slipping and falling on stair treads. Stair runners are long narrow lengths of carpeting that are affixed to the stair treads so they don't move when walked on.

With the current economic situation, more and more people are looking to spruce up their homes for less and less money. One of the easiest, most cost effective and most popular ways home owners are revitalizing their tired decor is with stair runners, complete with decorative stair rods. Installing a stair runner adds a taste of elegance to any home for very little money. To install a stair runner and decorative stair rods, you will need a square, a tape measure, a utility knife, a staple gun and staples, a carpet stretcher, a pencil and a straight edge. 1.) Remove all old carpet and carpet pad from the steps. Thoroughly clean the stairs. 2.) Measure the width of the stairs. 3.) Measure the width of your runner. 4.) Calculate the difference in width and divide it by 2. For example, if your stairs measure 32 and your runner measures 28, the difference is 4. Half of 4 is 2. 5.) Using your measuring tape, pencil and square, mark the stairs 2 from the wall on either side. You will be using this as a guide to install your stair runner. 6.) Cut pieces of carpet pad 1 shorter than your stair’s depth and 2 shorter than your runner’s width. 7.) Using your straight edge, pencil and tape measure, mark the stairs 1 from the crotch, towards the nose. Using your square, mark 1 toward the center on either side from your previous 2 markers. 8.) Using the guides placed in step 7, lay your carpet pad. 9.) Lay your stair runner on top of the pad, using your pencil lines as a guide. 10.) Starting at the bottom step, use your staple gun to secure the runner to the nose of the stair. 11.) Use your carpet stretcher to stretch the carpet up to the next step. 12.) Secure with staples in the crotch of the stair, making sure that the carpet is flat. 13.) Repeat this process for all stairs. 14.) When the stairs have been carpeted, you are ready to install your stair rods. 15.) Install your stair rods using the hardware provided to you by the stair rod manufacturer. Installation kits usually include two anchors for either side of the stair rod. After you have installed your stair runner using decorative stair rods, your home will have a classic, timeless look to it that will never go out of style. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that you made your home look like a million bucks for very little money.

Stair rods are long rods, similar to curtain rods, that are used to secure carpet stair runners along the length of a stairwell. They are secured to the stairs, over the runner, with mounting brackets at each end that are screwed into the stair tread where it meets the riser. The ends of the stair rod are usually capped with finials. There are a wide selection of colors and finial styles available so that almost any home decor and runner color or pattern can be accommodated. The rods themselves come in two basic types: hollow or solid core. The primary difference is that it is easier to bend the hollow rods so that they will better conform to curved stairs. So far as strength and durability, both types are equally strong under normal conditions. With the proper sized screws, stair rods can be installed directly on top of existing carpeting. Most manufacturers recommend that the stair rod be roughly two inches longer than the width of the runner that it is intended to hold down. It is suggested that underneath of the carpet runner a non-slip matting be placed down. This will help ensure that the runner stays in place despite the friction created by traveling up and down the stairs. Make sure to check the screws on the stair rods periodically to make sure they are not coming loose. If they are loose, tighten them up again. The screws do have a tendency over time to loosen a bit, which may cause the runner to bunch up and cause a potential hazard. To clean your stair rods, check the manufacturers instructions first. Most often you simply need a dry cloth to wipe them down and remove any dust. A damp cloth can be used if they become very soiled. Most have a lacquer coating, though, and use of cleaners should be restricted. Stair rods add a certain elegance to a stairwell. They are easy to install and maintain and can last for a very long time.
To transform plywood stairs into a stunning makeover, consider painting or staining them in a bold color or finish, adding a stylish stair runner or carpet, installing decorative stair risers, and incorporating unique lighting fixtures or artwork to enhance the overall look.
Installing a Stair RunnerStair runners serve several purposes. They can prevent slips on smooth stair surfaces or on stairs that are often wet, such as those in an entry way, or they can serve as a decorative touch on an otherwise bland stairway. There are many options for stair runners for either purpose; here are some ideas for unique and beautiful stair runners that can be as decorative as they are practical.Carpet RemnantsIn addition to pre-made stair runners, you can choose any carpet pattern to turn into a stair runner. Cut the carpet to the desired width and length. Use heavy-duty fabric adhesive to glue strips of coordinating fabric around the edges, from front to back. Install by stapling or nailing the runner to the tops of each stair riser.PaintFor a unique decorative touch on your stairs, consider painting a stair runner directly on your stairs with high-quality floor paint, available in any imaginable color. For stripes or other designs using straight lines, lay down painter's tape as guides and paint between the tape. Allow the floor to dry completely before removing the tape. You can also use stencils to create flowers, vines or other decorative designs.PlasticFor stairs that are more utilitarian, such as basement stairs or entry stairs, consider using textured plastic runners. Durable and slip-resistant, these runners will prevent falls and protect your stairs from scratches and damage from wet and salt- and gravel-embedded shoes in the winter.
