Francisco Romero was the first matador to fight a bull on foot in about the year 1726.
A "matador" is a presumed derivative of Late Latin mattus which means soft or weak. They wrestle bulls.
A matador, as with any entertainer, is paid per performance and does not receive a wage. Top matadors may receive tens of thousands of dollars for a single fight. His pay depends on his popularity which, in turn, depends on his skills as a matador.
A matador fights on foot. A rejoneador fights from horseback on specially trained horses. Some matadors, such as Carlos Arruza (died in the 1960s), have done both.

Yes, the 'show' will go on. In most bullfights there are three matadores who perform. If one is injured and unable to continue, the senior remaining matador will kill the bull without fanfare. The fight then continues with the regular rotation of performers.
Matador means 'one who kills' in reference to the matador being the torrero who kills the bull.
