The Red Hand of Ulster is synonymous with Ulster. It comes from the legend of Dermot and O'Neill and their race for Ulster. After a long horse race they reached a river. Dermot led. It had been agreed that the winner would be the one whose hand first touched Ulster. Dermot brought his horse into the river and began swimming to the other side. The CLG ( Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ) motif was taken from the centre piece of the "hurlers shield" which dates back to 1907. The 1885 date comes from the first clubs in Antrim who registered with the GAA in 1885.
