1. Listen to your coaches and keep a good attitude. At a freshman level, skills are not fully developed. So even if you aren't considered the best on your team (which most freshman aren't), coaches take notice of good attitudes of players, and will play you even if there are more skilled sophomores on the JV squad. Build up your teammates when they struggle, and they'll help you when you fall. 2. Don't be afraid to make mistakes during practice and during games. JV is a growth period, and even if you lose a game badly, you still have 2-3 years on varsity. Making mistakes is how you get better as a player. Don't be afraid what other players might think of you. 3. Challenge yourself. Don't look at how good other players are and get frustrated and discouraged. Set goals for yourself based on your levels, not others. Find your limits, and try to pass them. 4. Bond with the team. You're going to spend the next 2-4 years on the team. If you make it to senior year, you'll want to be as close as ever to your teammates. Yes, even guys can have team bonding. 5. Represent your school well. You want to have a good reputation for your school. Don't party late before tournament days, and don't make fun of other teams. Set an example, even as a freshman. The coaches will appreciate it, and so will your teammates. 6. Play for your team, not for yourself. Don't worry about how many kills or digs or aces you have. In the end, the record of wins and losses is more important than that.
