There wasn't an official NFL championship game until 1933. Before that, the NFL champion was simply the team with the best win-loss record at the end of the season.

In 1932, a playoff game had to be held to determine the champion, because two teams were tied for the best record. That led to the introduction of the NFL Championship Game, which lasted from 1933 through 1969.

After the AFL and NFL merged in 1970, the Super Bowl became the NFL championship game.
