Afi helps Amari survive by making sure she had food to eat, teaching her to exercise in order to stay strong, and helping her emotionally by giving her confidence that she can endure.Bill - A sailor who brings Amari safely to his cabin on the ship while all of the other sailors abuse and rape the other women. He is a very selfish and inconsiderate character.Mrs. Derby - Mrs. Derby is married to Mr. Derby, she's about 18 years old and carrying Mr. Derby's child. She has almost no control over her life, as she must submit to her husband. She was married off to Mr. Derby by her father despite the fact that she was in love with her own slave. Mrs. Derby treats the slaves with respect and dignity, much to her husbands' disapproval.Teenie - Teeny is a slave who works in the kitchen at the Derby's farm. She was born a slave and is very wise. Her main line in this book is that "Nothing is lost as long as you remember." Or something like that.Tidbit - Or Timothy, is the young four-year-old son of Teenie.Those are the most important characters that I can think of off the top of my head.
