He was president of South Africa when the World Cup was held there in 1995, and won by South Africa. He helped get a much wider support for the team than would have been possible in previous times, as it was always a game that white people played, but black people weren't allowed to, as part of the apartheid era. There were black players on the team by 1995. He presented the cup to the captain, Francois Pienaar.

What is the Rugby World Cup of 1995 famous for?

It was played in South Africa, a country that had often been shunned because of its apartheid laws and how they impacted rugby. They had gone by 1995. South Africa won that World Cup, their first ever win. The team helped unite a nation with both black and white people supporting the team. The trophy was presented by Nelson Mandela, who was then president of South Africa.
