Generally, the division winner with the best overall record plays the wildcard team. However, if the wildcard team and the team with the best overall record come from the same division, then the wildcard team will play the division winner with the second best overall record and the division winner with the best overall record will play the division winner with the worst overall record.

----------

This must not apply to the wildcard round, however, because the Cowboys (NFC East Winner - #3 Seed) and Eagles (wildcard team - #6 Seed) are playing in the wildcard round.

Does the team with the best record in baseball pick their opponent in the playoffs?

In each league, the team with the best record normally plays the Wild Card team. The exception is that if the team with the best record and the Wild Card team are from the same division, then the team with the best record plays the division winner with the worst record.

Who does the wildcard team play in the MLB playoffs?

That would depend on what team has the best winning percentage in the league. Generally, the wild card team plays the division winner with the best winning percentage. However, if the division winner with the best winning percentage is in the same division as the wild card team, then the wild card team will play the division winner with the second best winning percentage and the division winner with the best winning percentage will play the other division winner. MLB is the only major sport that sets up their playoff system this way. This would keep the Yankees and Red Sox from playing in the first round of the playoffs.

In baseball who does the wild card play?

In most cases, the division winner with the best overall season record plays the wildcard team and the other two division winners play each other. But, in the case where the wildcard team and the division winner with the best overall record come from the same division, the division winner with the second overall best record plays the wildcard team and the division winner with the best overall record plays the division winner with the third best overall record. Confusing? Kinda, and kinda not really fair either, but MLB does not want two teams from the same division playing each other in the first round of the playoffs.

How are the MLB playoffs pairings decided?

In each League, the division winner with the highest win percentage will play the wild card team, and the two remaining teams will play each other. The exception is when the division winner with the highest win percentage is in the same division as the wild card team, in which case the division winner with the second highest win percentage will play the wild card team, and the two remaining teams will play each other. If more that one team has the highest win percentage, a tie-breaker system will be used to determine which team shall play the wild card team.

How does the NFL decide what teams play each other in the playoffs?

Each conference has six teams that make the playoffs, the four division winners and two wild card teams. The division winners are seeded 1 through 4 based on regular season record and the two wild card teams are seeded 5 and 6 based on regular season record. The two division winners with the best regular season record (seeds 1 and 2) get the first week off while the other four teams must play. The division winner that is seeded 3rd plays the wild card team that is seeded 6th and the division winner that is seeded 4th plays the wild card team that is seeded 5th. The following week the number 1 seed team will play the lowest seed team that won the previous week and the number 2 seed will play the other team that won the previous week.

What is the MLB tie-breaking procedure when two wild card teams finish the regular season with the same win-loss record and winning percentage?

MLB conducts a coin toss prior to the conclusion of the season. All teams who have the possibility of being the wild card (or the possibility of a tie for division winner) are included and all possible scenarios are covered. The team winning the coin toss hosts a one-game playoff to see which team advances as the wild card, or which team wins the division, if that is the case. If two teams are tied for thhe division lead, and also tied with a team from another division for the wild card, the two teams tied for the division lead will have their tie-breaker game played first. The winner of that game is the division champ, and the loser of that game plays a one game tie-breaker against the team from the other division to determine the wild card.

What is the baseball playoff tiebreaker when 3 teams have the exact same record and none are division winners?

If these teams are not going for the division or wild card, there will be no tiebreaker. Otherwise, here is how it would work. First, two of the teams would be decided to play against each other. The winner of that team would play against the third team. The winner of that game would move on. If the winning team is the division titlist and the two losing teams are tied for the wild card, the two wild card teams would play one more tiebreaker game to decide the wild card winner.

How does a team make it to the World Series?

By winning its division and then winning the two league playoff championships. There are four teams from each league that go to the playoffs, three division winners and one wildcard team. The usual seeding is the division winner with the best season record plays the wildcard team and the two other division winners play each other. However, if the team with the best overall record and the wildcard team come from the same division then the wildcard team will play the division winner with the second best overall record and the division winner with the best overall record will play the other division winner. The winners of those two seven game series then play another seven game series with the winner advancing to the World Series.

How does the nrl finals work?

The two lowest placed losers from the first round, however if three of the bottom 4 teams in the 8 win and the 4th team loses, then the 4th team (i.e Storm) is gone and if all of the bottom 4 teams win then 3 and 4 (i.e. Titans and Storm) are gone. The top 2 teams get a second chance. The top two placed winners from Week 1 are straight through to Week 3 without having to play week 2. The 4th ranked winner from week 1 plays the 2nd ranked loser from week 1 in week 2, and the winner of that game plays the top ranked winner from week 1 in week 3. The 3rd ranked winner from week 1 plays the top ranked loser from week 1 in week 2, and the winner of that game plays the 2nd ranked winner from week 3.

Can a NFL wildcard team play the division winner of their division in the wildcard playoff round?

Yes.In the NFL playoffs, teams play each other strictly by seed (3 plays 6 and 4 plays 5). Also, if the division winner was a 3 or 4 seed and the two wildcard teams came from that division, it would not be possible to keep teams from the same division from meeting in the wildcard round. This in different than the MLB playoffs where the wildcard team cannot play their division winner.
