NHL players play 82 games between early October and mid-April. Sometimes, if a team has a stretch of several days between games, the coach may give his team time away from the rink. However, normally, even on non-game days there are practices, team meetings, video sessions, travel to the next city and so on. Hockey is not played in the summer, of course.
