April 12th, 1980
1981, I remember it well, it was raining, no sunny, OK maybe I do not remember 1981 very well but Terry did start his run then and we continue it for him to this day.
April 12th,1980. he ran average 42 kilometers (26 miles) a day through six provinces.
Terry Fox ran about 23.4 miles per day. Almost a marathon(26 miles and 385yards)
Terrance "Terry" Stanley Fox started his legendary marathon in St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada on April 12th, 1980. This city was chosen because it is Canada's Eastern most city on the shore of the Atlantic The "Marathon of Hope," as his trek was called took him through six Canadian provinces, covering 3,339 miles. He ran nearly a marathon a day for 143 days before it was discovered on September 1st, 1980 that the cancer that took his leg at 18 had spread to his lungs as well.
terry reached it after newfoundland
According to the Wikipedia article on his name, although Terry Fox did complete part of the journey, his cancer returned. He had to be forced to end his run after 143 days and after less than 6000 km of running.
The best answer I read was from a friend of his, "anger" is what motivated Terry Fox. After his cancer was found, he spent a lot of time in a pediatric cancer ward & became friends with other patients. The majority of them died and he became determined to do something about this. The irony is that to-day, the type of bone cancer that cost him his leg and then his life, has a high cure rate.
Terry started his run on April 12, in the fall of 1980.
you can read or buy his biography in any bookstore or library. he is considered one of Canada's greatest heroes, to this day we have a Terry Fox day that raises millions for cancer research each and every year.
I seem to remember that Mayor Jean Drapeau was NOT supportive of Terry Fox's epic run and refused to give permission for the fund-raising aspect as the young man ran through Montreal. Is this accurate?
